If you’re applying for jobs in industry, do you ever get rebuffed by not having enough commercial experience?

Due to the increasing shift of doctors seeking alternative non-clinical careers, companies now no longer struggle to get doctors.

However they do struggle to find doctors who have commercial experience.

But how do you get commercial experience when you’re purely clinical? You need a job to do that.. right? Or an MBA (this isn’t commercial experience btw..!) But it’s like a chicken and egg scenario.

10 years ago when I started Medic Footprints, I had ZERO commercial experience. All I knew was Medicine.

However with trial and error and time and passion for supporting doctors alternative careers, I developed on the job experience. I started something. Grew something and learned the hard way. But hey.. all that learning was extremely valuable and transferable for so many things.. it massively stands out when I’m applying for anything.

Starting a business for yourself seems to be the scariest thing for doctors. It’s alien considering we’ve had an employed job all our lives and it seems to be super risky. Right?

However this is one of the easiest ways to develop commercial experience.

Start something.

You don’t need to formally setup a business.. just start a project. It could be anything local or national, online or offline. It doesn’t even have to work.

As long as you’re solving a problem that people would want to pay for. And you’ve tried.

(A business HAS to be able to make money.. otherwise it’s not a business..)

Companies love the stories that go with it.

They’re referring to the big 3 firms like McKinsey laying people off after the economic downturn. But what most people don’t realise, is that consulting is as popular as ever.. particularly if you’re self employed. ie. in business for yourself (not for a company..!)

So we’ll aim to run this course IN PERSON.

Simply because the value of an in-person event outweighs online.. and a half day online course causes significant fatigue - where in person simply creates an amazing buzz with learning and networking!
