How I landed £40k+ from one room..
What most doctors miss about networking, and how one room changed everything
Hello!
Several years ago I attended an in-person event I nearly said no to.
It was a faff to get to, I didn’t know anyone there and would have to juggle clinical to actually show up.
But for some reason I made it happen. And to this day I couldn’t tell you why.
I didn’t regret it.
I wasn’t there to pitch or present, but I start having some conversations and was clear on wanting to connect with those who could help me reach more doctors who were ambitious in developing alternative careers.
I look back and I was totally new to the whole networking thing, but I look back and see how this resulted in >£40k.
It was my clarity; I knew who I was for (medical doctors), who I wasn’t (non-doctors) and the outcome I could help doctors achieve (fantastic alternative careers).
That one event opened doors I didn’t see coming:
A strategic partnership that brought in lots of doctors
An invite to be a keynote speaker at a national event
An introduction that led to a business sponsorship
In total? Over £40k of direct opportunities, and a lot more in long-term value.
💡 Here are my top 3 lessons from that day:
1. Be clear on what you stand for!
The best rooms aren’t about pitching. They’re about connection. If you can say clearly what you’re about and who you help, people remember.
WARNING: 99.9% of doctors struggle with this.
Even worse… they try to figure it out in their head all alone before they tell anyone.. not realising clarity comes from action and feedback; not from circling it around endlessly in your head.
2. Ask better questions .. then LISTEN!
The best relationships came from asking thoughtful, curious questions and active listening… rather than straight off pitching. People want to be seen and understood before they ever want your offer or you ask for a job. Value first, offer later.
3. Fortune is in the follow-up!
Opportunity fades quickly and people forget in the busy-ness. Most of the value comes not AT the event, but after. For opportunities I’m serious about, I follow up relentlessly.
It works.
Most doctors don’t do this. They sit and wait, then end up in fantasy land where the other person supposedly put them on their ghosting list. But they never know either way as they don’t follow up to check. 80% of opportunities land after about 5 follow ups!
Final tip?
Don’t underestimate an in person event - in fact this still BEATS online for getting opportunities by about 3 times!
It’s not just about showing up.. its about knowing what to do, when you do!
