"I'll never be good enough.." What's your value as a doctor?

This week I’m back to the value piece for doctors.

As a self-employed Occupational Health Physician we get paid by the day, half day or case. Each case is anything up to one hour and a rate is agreed.

However in reality, it normally takes more than one hour to do the work because you

👉🏽Have to read the management referral plus any other documentation that goes with it (e.g. job description, sickness absence record, medical letters)

👉🏽Develop rapport with the referred employee

👉🏽Take a detailed history

👉🏽Formulate a plan

(all whilst writing the notes..)

👉🏽Then write a comprehensive report that has to address all the questions the employer asked. Usually ends up being 2 pages of A4 at size 12 font, or more.

Solicitors charge for their time by the hour.. so why don’t doctors?

Because we don’t value ourselves, therefore our clients, employers etc won’t value us as much as we would like.
