How did the subject line make you feel?
Uncomfortable? Curious? Alarmed that a doctor dare even ask the question..?
This week at the Doctors in Industry Fellowship™, we had our Go to Market Strategy session with Dr. Charlotte Lee Sinclair - Head of Growth at mental health startup Limbic.
Amongst many things, she asked a group of stunned doctors:
“Who wants to make money?”
Nobody but me emphatically put their hand up. (I have to pay for childcare..!)
This isn’t unusual for us as doctors. You’ve seen me talking about our value time and time again. We don’t actually value ourselves that much.. therefore this is reflected on how others value us.
Hence maybe one of the reasons why pay for doctors in the UK and EU is relatively lower compared to our counterparts elsewhere.
Also.. we don’t like talking about money. It makes us uncomfortable.
.. but we HAVE to get comfortable with it. Why?
We NEED money to LIVE our LIVES.. simple! We can’t escape it.
With most doctors in our research stating they wanted careers that were financial stable, and with better pay.. why would you NOT get comfortable talking about money?
This conversation came up when one of our Fellows raised the question about how to price their consulting services for a health tech medical advisor role.

On the theme of money…
I’m not going to lie. I’m always super dubious about opportunities like this one.
And when this one came up, I decided I was going to trust in the people already advocating for it.. other likeminded doctors.
I think about the number of years I worked to get a CCT (completion of training / becoming a consultant) in a specialty like that was the holy grail.
But realistically it was just the beginning. And it didn’t come with guaranteed income if I stopped working.
With this opportunity, I see it like a specialty training program.
In your own time you learn a well designed pathway and highly valuable and transferable skillset to achieve your goals. Your CCT is when your earnings exceed your income.
The difference here is, as long as you’ve done the work, the income doesn’t stop if you stop.
I recently met a 24 year old earning £250k a year of guaranteed income, having started when she was 19. She now lives in various parts of the world, has a team of 5000 people doing the same.. and her take..?
”Next stop, I’m doing Mexico”.
